NEIGHBORHOODS & COMMUNITIES We don't just work in your neighborhood, we live there. In nearly every community we serve, NYNEX employees are raising families, shopping local stores, attending plays, going to museums, volunteering their time and talents to help others. Why? Because that's what good neighbors do. You see, technology is just one way NYNEX is working to make our neighborhoods better. How can we help you? This year marks the company's 100th year of supporting health and human services agencies through the United Way. In 1995 NYNEX employees pledged $5.5 million, while the NYNEX family of companies donated $4.2 million. Starting in 1996, NYNEX plans to match its employees' contributions. We also encourage a range of employee initiatives that reflect our commitments to education, health, culture and the environment. Some examples: Through NYNEX's Volunteer Recognition Program, our employees contribute more than their time and talent. In 1995, they raised approximately $115,000 in company contributions for organizations in communities where NYNEX employees each volunteered more than 100 hours per year. Employees can also walk, bowl, swim, run, bike, dance, play volleyball ... you name it ... to raise money for non-profit orgaizations. NYNEX will donate up to $1,000 per participating employee through the Employee Pledge-A-Thon Program. Each year, the NYNEX Scholarship Program for Children of Employees provides approximately $750,000 to more than 400 students. And NYNEX has just introduced a new scholarship fund for students in communities we serve who aren't related to our employees. It's called the NYNEX Diversity Scholarship Awards. As much as $250,000 will be available for students from our multicultural communites. Employees can also double their personal contributions to educational, cultural and environmental organizations through the NYNEX Matching Gift Program. In 1995 matched donations reached $1.7 million. Our people bring a rich variety of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs to the company and their neighborhoods. NYNEX recognizes and encourages this diversity by supporting the following employee organizations:
The company is also engaged in aggressive recycling, waste management and hazardous-materials disposal programs. For instance, printing bills on both sides of the page instead of one saves two million pounds of paper a year. Our directory publishing unit recycles more than 6,000 tons of paper each year and has cut 2,750 tons of paper from its phone books. Kids may now have to sit on two Yellow Pages to reach supper, but we think it's worth it.
