GRANT GUIDELINES

When an organization applies to NYNEX Corporate Philanthropy and Foundation for support we seek evidence that the group has a clear purpose, is efficiently organized and provides a needed service.

NYNEX Corporate Philanthropy and Foundation will review proposals on a continuous basis from January through September. Applications received after October 1 will be processed in the following calendar year. Application proposals should be submitted with a description of the organization, its history, a statement of objectives and an overview of long-range plans. After reviewing your material we may request additional information.

This information is designed to help nonprofit organizations in the New England and New York areas save time when applying for a grant. Please follow the steps below to create a grant proposal that meets NYNEX's grant proposal requirements.

WHEN TO APPLY

NYNEX Corporate Philanthropy and Foundation will review unsolicited proposals on a continuous basis from January through September. Applications received after October 1 will be reviewed for the following calendar year. The majority of our funding is distributed through our RFP programs.

WHAT TO SEND

I. PROPOSAL SUMMARY

The project proposal itself should be outlined in detail as follows:

  • Amount of grant request

  • What action is proposed

  • How action is to be carried out

  • What results are expected

  • How results will satisfy community needs

  • Time frame for the project

  • Budget for the project

  • Qualifications of person who will be responsible for the project

  • Anticipated cooperation with other community organizations

  • Proposed method of accountability should funding be granted


II. NARRATIVE

NYNEX Corporate Philanthropy and Foundation also requires information on the applicant organization's other sources of support. We look for a well-planned funding strategy that demonstrates a need for the contributions without dependence on any single source of assistance. (Please do not use more than five pages.)

A. BACKGROUND

Describe the work of your agency, addressing each of the following topics:

  • A brief description of its history and mission

  • The need or problem that your organization works to address

  • Current programs and accomplishments. Please emphasize the achievements of the past year.

  • The population that your agency serves, including geographic location, socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability and language

  • Number of paid full-time staff; number of paid part-time staff; number of volunteers

  • Your organization's relationships - both formal and informal - with other organizations working to meet the same needs or providing similar services. Please explain how you differ from these other agencies.

B. FUNDING REQUEST

Please describe the program or specific project for which you seek funding. Include:

  • A statement of its primary purpose and the need or problem that you are seeking to address

  • The population that you plan to serve and how this population will benefit from the project

  • Strategies that you will employ to implement your project

  • The names and qualifications of the individuals who will direct the project

  • Anticipated length of the project and the period this grant will cover

  • How the project contributes to your organization's overall mission

  • Please list the foundations, corporations and other sources that you are soliciting for funding and, to the best of your knowledge, the status of your proposal with each.

C. EVALUATION

Please explain how you will measure the effectiveness of your activities. Describe your criteria for a successful program and the results you expect to have achieved by the end of the funding period.


III. ATTACHMENTS

Please label all attachments.

We seek evidence that the organization is accountable for its actions, with regular self-evaluation and public reporting and that it fosters the development of skilled leadership.

To that end, the following documents should also be submitted with the proposal:

  • A copy of current federal IRS tax-exemption certificate 501(c)(3)

  • A copy of tax form 990

  • A copy of the annual budget and audited statements from the previous two years

  • Organizational information, including board of directors and officers of the not-for-profit

  • Evidence of competent leadership, active participation by the governing board and effective use of volunteers

  • List of current contributors and amounts

PREPARING YOUR GRANT PROPOSAL

Note: This form is a hybrid of forms used by the: New York Regional Association of Grantmakers, 505 Eighth Avenue, Suite 1805, New York, NY 10018-6505 (212-714-0699), and Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts, Inc., 294 Washington Street, Suite 840, Boston, MA 02106 (617-426-2606). According to the Massachusetts Attorney General's Division of Public Charities, nonprofits with revenues equal to, or more than, $250,000 must conduct an annual independent audit. Those with revenues between $100,000 and $249,999 may conduct an accounts review in lieu of an independent audit. Any nonprofit with revenues of $99,999 or less is not required to conduct an independent audit or an accounts review. All grants sent to us via the Internet will get first review priority and receive a response within 48 hours of receipt.

Mailed or faxed applications using the Common Application Form will receive a six-week response time.

Grant requests not on the Common Application Form can expect a twelve-week response.
