College students have come a long way from expressing themselves by swallowing
a bowl o' goldfish or stuffing themselves into crowded phone booths. Advances
in communication technology starts with education. At NYNEX, we're doing our
part to ensure the students of today are prepared to be the communication
leaders of tomorrow.
HOUGHTON COLLEGE
If Houghton College's School of Education has its way, chalk and
blackboards in our nation's classrooms may go the way of inkwells and quill
pens. NYNEX, in partnership with the Wendt Foundation, is helping this college
in Buffalo, New York establish a multimedia laboratory where students learn to
teach using the latest in educational technology.
Education students learn about
the latest multimedia computer programs, which bring school subjects to life
through sound and video images. These future teachers learn to use multimedia
technology to store samples of students' writings, artwork and video clips.
Houghton College's laboratory has become a model for schools of education in New
York and across the country.
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
The NYNEX Foundation will award $1.2 million in grants this year to colleges,
universities and other educational institutions in New York and New England
in a major expansion of its Excellence in Education Awards program.
In addition, NYNEX is expanding the number of colleges and universities
that are eligible. Non-profit educational organizations that provide classroom
programs for junior high and high school students are also eligible for the
first time.
The awards, which range from $5,000 to $50,000, will help fund projects
that foster the use of communications technology in the classroom.
