Each student will receive $2,500, an increase from last year's $1,000 award. The affiliates will select a recipient based on academic achievement, leadership and community involvement exhibited by the individual. The award is a one-time, non-renewable grant for students enrolled in a two- or four-year college or vocational school. "NYNEX's support for our young people is often the difference in their being able to continue their educational goals," said National Urban League President Hugh B. Price. "But our relationship with NYNEX extends well beyond the educational arena. We've developed partnership programs in the areas of human resources, job training and hiring, technology access, communications systems analysis and community development, as well as education." "NYNEX shares the Urban League's commitment to higher education," said NYNEX Chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg. "The recipients of these grants have demonstrated academic excellence and leadership at school and in the community. We're delighted to provide the opportunity for them to further their education and realize future career goals." NYNEX's awards this year amount to $32,500 and total $230,000 since 1990 for numerous educational programs and benefit events. The selected affiliates are located in the following communities: Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Central Islip, New York City, Syracuse and Westchester County in New York State; Stamford, Hartford and New Haven, Conn.; Boston and Springfield, Mass.; and Providence, R.I. In addition to the scholarship awards, NYNEX this year also contributed $1,000,000 to the league to build two technology centers that will train inner-city youth in the use of computer technology and to fund the launch of a national public service campaign.
