Don Reed was named president and group executive of NYNEX in January 1995. He directs NYNEX's regional, national and international government affairs, public policy initiatives, legal matters and public relations.

Prior to his present position, Mr. Reed was president and chief executive officer of NYNEX in New England since June 1993.

Mr. Reed's background in the communications industry spans more than 28 years. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Virginia Military Institute in 1966 and joined New England Telephone's management program. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 until 1969, including a tour of duty in Vietnam as a captain in the 82nd Airborne and First Infantry Divisions.

After military service, Mr. Reed rejoined New England Telephone. He held a variety of marketing positions with the company from 1969 until 1983, when he was promoted to state vice president-External Affairs in New Hampshire.

In July 1986 Mr. Reed became vice president-Government Affairs for NYNEX in Washington, D.C., a position he held until December 1987 when he was appointed president of NYNEX Information Resources Company. In 1990 Mr. Reed was appointed vice president-Human Resources and Quality of NYNEX. In April 1991 he was elected executive vice president and chief operating officer of New England Telephone.

Mr. Reed is a strong advocate for youth, particularly young people at risk. As trustee of the Museum of Science in Boston, president of the Boy Scouts of America, Boston Minuteman Council, board member of U.S. First, and chairman of the Sports Museum of New England, he is involved with creating innovative opportunities to educate and engage youth.

Mr. Reed serves on the NYNEX Telecommunications Board and participates on international business roundtables and committees that focus on global telecommunications development and public policy issues. He also is an active member of the Boston Coordinating Committee, Jobs for Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Business Roundtable, the National Planning Association, The New England Council, The Paul Revere Corporation, The Phoenix House, The Commercial Club of Boston, and the Center for Business Ethics at Bentley College.
