Richard A. Jalkut, president and group executive - NYNEX Telecommunications,
oversees a business that provides telecommunications services to approximately
12 million customers across the Northeast, has 65,000 employees and $12 billion
in operating revenues.
Mr. Jalkut began his telecommunications career at New England Telephone in 1966 after graduating from Boston College. He was named vice president of the company's operation in Maine in 1981, and in 1988 he became executive vice president and chief operating officer. In 1990 Mr. Jalkut was appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer of New York Telephone. The following year, he was appointed president and chief executive officer. In January 1994, New York Telephone became NYNEX-New York as part of the corporation's one brand-one enterprise initiative. In addition to his NYNEX responsibilities, Mr. Jalkut participates in a wide range of economic development and philanthropic activities. He is a member of the board of directors of the Business Council of New York State. He is chairman of the board of directors of the New York City Partnership, and chairman of the New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. He is a member of the board of directors of the American Women's Economic Development Corporation and the National Task Force of the New York Institute of Technology. He serves on the Executive Committee and the Executive Board of the Northeast Region of the Boy Scouts of America, and also is a member of the organization's National Executive Committee. Mr. Jalkut is also chairman of the Police Athletic League's Capital Campaign. He is a member of the board of directors of the American Museum of Natural History, the United Way of New York City and the Marine Midland Bank and a member of the board of trustees of Lesley College in Massachusetts and Boston College. Many organizations in the arts, academia and health and human services have recognized Mr. Jalkut and NYNEX for their leadership and support. Mr. Jalkut has focused NYNEX resources to sponsor and fund advanced science and technology development programs for kindergarten classes through the 12th grade.
