Arnold Eckelman joined New York Telephone in March 1970 as a candidate in the
Management Career Development Program. After a series of assignments in the
Commercial Department he was named plant manager in Albany in 1976.
Mr. Eckelman was appointed district construction manager-Northeast in 1978. Subsequently, he was district staff manager-Upstate and district manager-Maintenance Center. In June 1983 Mr. Eckelman was selected to work with the State of New York as a loaned executive, where he assisted the Office of General Services in developing a new fleet management system. Upon completion of this assignment, he was appointed division staff manager-Customer Services for New York Telephone in January 1984. Mr. Eckelman became division manager-Midtown Manhattan-Customer Services in July 1984 and was reassigned as director of Quality in July 1985. In February 1987, he was named general manager-Business Marketing Operations. He was appointed vice president and general manager-Customer Services-Manhattan in August 1988. In June 1990, Mr. Eckelman was named assistant vice president-Operations reporting directly to the executive vice president and chief operating officer. In July 1991 Mr. Eckelman was appointed group vice president in charge of all customer services for Staten Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and northern Manhattan. In March 1993 he was named executive vice president and chief operating officer for the company. Reflecting a restructuring throughout NYNEX, Mr. Eckelman became executive vice president and chief operating officer-New York for the NYNEX Telecommunications Group in January 1994. He assumed the position of executive vice president and group executive-Network Services in January 1995. In July he became executive vice president and group executive-Quality Assurance and Operations Support. Born in Amsterdam, New York, Mr. Eckelman graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He was in the United States Army for three years and served as a Captain in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
