March of Dimes Receives $11,600 NYNEX Gift

SYRACUSE, NY -- The March of Dimes WalkAmerica and Campaign for Healthier Babies has received a gift of nearly $11,600 from NYNEX, its employees and NYNEX retirees.

Half of the money was raised in the form of contributions by more than 100 NYNEX employees and retirees who participated in last years WalkAmerica events in Syracuse, Binghamton, Utica and Watertown. The other half of the contribution was a matching grant from NYNEX. The walkers are members of the Central New York NYNEX Telephone Pioneers, a non-profit group of employees and retirees involved in numerous activities benefitting communities in the region.

WalkAmerica is the first and largest walking event and the March of Dimes biggest fund-raiser for infant health-care programs. More than 1,400 communities across the nation hold WalkAmerica events each year, with a total of $65.8 million raised last year by participants sponsorships and matching gifts.

Presenting the combined NYNEX gift at a recent ceremony in Syracuse was Dick Coach Mac MacPherson, NYNEX spokesman and former Syracuse University and New England Patriots football coach; NYNEX community relations director Jack Purcell; Beth Trunfio, March of Dimes Executive Director; and Kathy Arcaro and Maggie Murray, NYNEX Telephone Pioneers.
