June 12, 1996 NYNEX CONTACT: Cliff Lee, (212) 395-0500 NYNEX Expands Digital Network in Binghamton BINGHAMTON, NY -- The City of Binghamton is going digital. On June 15, NYNEX will activate a $6.3 million state-of-the-art digital switching system for its Binghamton customers in the 720, 722, 723, 724, 771, 772, 773 and 774 exchanges. When combined with the regions more than 90,000 miles of optical fiber -- the pipeline for rapid, high-volume transmission of voice, data and video messages -- and a vast array of new business and residential services, the NYNEX digital switching system will provide Binghamton residents and businesses with one of the most advanced telecommunications networks in the world. The Binghamton project is another example of NYNEXs commitment to its customers in Binghamton and the Southern Tier, said Susan Kennedy, NYNEX vice president and general manager for Central New York operations. The digital network serving Binghamton, as well as Johnson City, Endicott and Vestal, also reflects a commitment from the NYNEX employees in this region. NYNEX and its employees will continue to upgrade services and enhance our more than $1.2 billion investment in the region. The Henry Street digital switching center will provide about 35,000 business and residential customer lines with new features and services, including ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), PhoneSmart and Digital Centrex. ISDN allows customers to transmit and receive video, voice and data simultaneously over a single telephone line at rates significantly faster than conventional computer modems. In addition, digital switching is the backbone for other NYNEX services, such as telemedicine and distance learning. Some new PhoneSmart features include:
Repeat Dialing - Automatically redials a busy number for up to 30 minutes. Call Return - Redials the number of the last caller. Call Trace - Sends the telephone number of the last caller to the NYNEX Annoyance Call Bureau. Call Answering Service - Allows residential and small business customers to set up one or more voice mailboxes to automatically answer calls when the customer is away from or already on the phone. Ringmate Service - Allows two or three telephone numbers to be associated with one telephone line. Each number has a distinctive ring. The service is convenient for families with teenage children or people with home businesses.
