February 1, 1996 NYNEX CONTACT: Media Relations, (212) 395-0500 Ivan Seidenberg Addresses Federal Telecom Legislation New York, NY -- Editor's Note - The following is a transcript of an interview with Ivan Seidenberg that appeared in a NYNEX Video News Release issued following the passage of federal telecom legislation on 2/1/96. 1. What is the significance of this new bill? Well, for NYNEX this bill represents a major opportunity for growth, to create economic wealth, participate in expansion of the global market and to continue to reposition our business to be a major player in these fast changing markets. 2. What gave rise to this new legislation? There were three driving forces that lead to this legislation. The first is consumers. Consumers want more things, they want it faster, with better quality at better price. Customers are the primary driver behind it. Secondly is technology - we all know that technology keeps changing every day in this industry. And it is the fueling force that enables customers to think and require new products and services. And the last thing of course - governments and regulation have been changing not only here in the U.S., but around the world. So it was time for the congress to pass a bill that would modernize a 60 year old communications law and meet the requirements of a global market place. 3. What types of new, expanded services can consumers expect from this new bill? What well see is an acceleration of the modernization of communications, information and entertainment products. So well see all digital networks which will lead to faster access to computers. This will lead to the ability to have video conferencing from any two points in the world and it will lead to new things like new long distance service for customers, cellular services for customers, and, in effect, it will also provide for companies like NYNEX, the ability to market and package these products and services in a way that is customized to individual customers all the way up to the largest and most sophisticated business customers. 4. How will NYNEX distinguish itself in this new environment? NYNEX will continue to do what weve been doing for the past couple of years, which is be quick to market, provide our customers with the latest and the greatest in the new technology. For example, we have much broader wire free services than we have ever had before. We have our yellow pages is up on the Internet, were building a video network with the provision of entertainment to customers. Weve recently announced the fact that we will get new, faster basic telephone lines out to our customers so they can use new sophisticated products for computers. And then on top of all that what we believe is that we will be in a better position to market and package and price different options for customers so that they can get the exact products they need when they want them.
