National Urban League Leader Hugh B. Price Joins NYNEX Board of Directors

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Board of Directors of NYNEX Corporation today elected Hugh B. Price a director of the corporation.

Mr. Price, 53, is president and chief executive officer of the National Urban League, America's foremost social service and civil rights organization.

The mission of the National Urban League is to help African Americans achieve social and economic equality. A nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based organization, the League carries out its mission through program services, research, advocacy and bridge-building between races. Headquartered in New York City, the National Urban League has 114 affiliates in 34 states and the District of Columbia.

"NYNEX is proud to build on its association with the National Urban League and add to its board such a forceful and eloquent advocate for communication between races as Hugh Price," said NYNEX Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ivan G. Seidenberg. "His wide-ranging experience in public life and business will prove invaluable as we offer new products and services and build new relationships with customers."

Mr. Price's distinguished career in urban affairs and public policy advocacy has included a vice presidency of the Rockefeller Foundation, where he oversaw programs to increase minority opportunities and managed education initiatives for at-risk youth; five years on the editorial board of the New York Times, where he wrote editorials on subjects including urban affairs, public education, welfare, criminal justice and telecommunications; a partnership in Cogen, Holt & Associates, a New Haven-based consulting firm specializing in urban community development programs; a tenure as human resources administrator for the City of New Haven; and six years as senior vice president of WNET/Thirteen, New York City's public television station. He became president and chief executive officer of the National Urban League on July 1, 1994.

His articles have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Review of Black Political Economy and Education Week. His weekly column, "To Be Equal," appears in African-American newspapers across the country.

Mr. Price was appointed by President Clinton to serve on the National Skills Standards Board. Currently he is a director of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Cooper Union, the Urban Institute and the Academy of Political Science. He is also a member of the Century Association, the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Philosophical Society and the Yale Law School Association.

A graduate of Amherst College, Mr. Price received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1966.
