September 11, 1995 NYNEX CONTACT: Media Relations, (212) 395-0500 NYNEX Again Named One of 100 Most Innovative, Advanced Firms for Working Moms by Working Mother Magazine NEW YORK CITY -- NYNEX, for the fourth year in a row, has been named one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers, by Working Mother magazine. The Working Mother 100 comprises the country's most innovative and forward-looking firms in support of working families. Out of the 350 serious contenders this year, 17 new companies were added to the list--making competition even stiffer for NYNEX. Working Mother publishes the complete list in its October issue. The companies are selected and ranked in categories using the following criteria: pay (compared with the competition), opportunities for women to advance, support for child care (financial, referrals, and/or actual care), and family-friendly benefits (job-protected leave for childbirth, telecommuting, flextime, part-time work, job sharing, elder care and others). Companies that meet these criteria do the best job in helping women balance their work and family obligations. In honor of the 10-year anniversary for Working Mother 100, the magazine is hosting a breakfast reception this morning (9/11) at the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Special guests include Katie Couric, co-anchor of NBC's Today; Donna Hanover Guiliani, broadcast journalist and First Lady, City of New York; and Louis V. Gerstner, chairman and CEO, IBM Corp. More than 300 CEOs and human resource executives are expected to attend. Among the initiatives cited by Working Mother as key to NYNEX's friendly work and family environment are: -- Access to an extensive resource and referral program for elder- and child-care programs. -- Dependent Care Reimbursement Funds -- as part of unprecedented union management agreements, funds totalling $10.5 million that provide subsidies to certain employees who incur costs for approved child and/or elder care. -- Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile "The Little Roamers" Infant/Child Care Facility -- the first on-site infant/child-care facility among the nation's regional telephone companies. -- 12-month Care for Newborn Child Leave with benefit continuation, service credit and, when feasible, the ability to phase back to work on a part-time basis. -- Flexible work arrangements where possible, including compressed work weeks, flextime, telecommuting, job sharing and part-time plans.
-- Updated appraisal and compensation program that holds senior
management accountable for the advancement of women and minorities.
