August 23, 1995 NYNEX CONTACT: Media Relations, (212) 395-0500 Motorola Installs Its First In-building Wireless Phone System at Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL -- Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile employees in Connecticut have become the first customers in the United States to use a new wireless in-building communications system developed by Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG). INReach(TM) is the industry's only interior wireless solution that connects digitally with multiple Private Branch Exchange (PBX) manufacturers providing for a larger capacity system. The innovative radio telephone solution enables a person to use a cellular phone to place and receive calls throughout a building or campus-like setting. INReach interconnects with virtually any PBX or CENTREX system and the calls are charged via the regular landline system rather than through the cellular carrier. When off-campus, the same cellular phone can also be set up for service on the traditional cellular network, thereby offering additional functionality to INReach end users. Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile will initially use Motorola's INReach system for 60 of its employees at the Wallingford, Connecticut office. The system will allow customer service, operations, engineering and human resources workers to use their cellular phone as an extension or substitute to their desk phone. In addition, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile will use the INReach system to showcase its capabilities and advantages to their potential customers. Motorola is the first to introduce an in-building wireless phone system that operates on multiple PBX digital interfaces -- one of the benefits important to Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile. With INReach, PBX features, such as call transfer and forwarding, call waiting, and three-way calling, can be more easily translated from the desk phone to the wireless handset, while significantly reducing required port capacity for the PBX. As one of the industry's largest capacity wireless in-building systems, INReach can support up to 2,500 subscribers. ``We have long understood the attractiveness of in-building wireless communications for our customers,'' said Richard J. Lynch, executive vice president and chief technology officer, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile. ``Through our deployment of microcells in such places as convention centers, train stations, and hotels, we know that our customers like and want this convenience. This opportunity gives us the ability to take this service to the next level of truly personal communications.'' ``Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile is a leader in recognizing that wireless communications can increase productivity for their customers and employees in both an indoor and outdoor environment,'' said Jack Finlayson, vice president and general manager of CIG's Pan American Markets Division. ``With the INReach system in their building, Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile can now demonstrate the advantages of the system first hand to their customers.'' The in-building system for Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile uses Motorola's compact, fully self-contained ten-channel MICRO CITE(TM) cell site. The INReach system is IS-94 (the Telecommunications Industry Association standard for in-building wireless PBX systems) compliant. The wireless in-building system is targeted for use in single or multiple building environments, such as corporate and government offices, manufacturing facilities, hospitals, hotels and casinos, schools and universities, and convention centers. Because it uses a base station with a distributed antenna architecture, the INReach system provides uniform coverage in a cost effective manner.
