Domestic Telecommunications Service Area
- NYNEX operates in the northeastern United States, specifically in
New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and
parts of Connecticut.
- NYNEX Information Resources Company offers "Big Yellow,"
a national on-line business directory on the World Wide Web. Big Yellow
features more than 9,000 local and national advertisements.
- NYNEX Science & Technology, Inc., which performs research and development on advanced communications technologies, developed NYNEX VoiceDialing, a pioneering application of speech recognition technology to telephony. Other major local exchange companies license the technology from Science & Technology.
Domestic Wireless
- Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile provides a full range of wireless local,
long distance, data and paging communications in the largest single cellular
service territory, stretching continuously from Maine to South Carolina, and
including parts of the Southwest. Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile (a joint venture in which NYNEX and Bell Atlantic
participate) had 3.4 million customers
in a service territory covering nearly 54 million people on December 31, 1995
(NYNEX owns a 38% interest).
- PrimeCo Personal Communications, L.P. will provide innovative, nationally branded wireless services in 11 markets nationwide. PrimeCo's license area covers a population of more than 53 million. (NYNEX owns a 25% interest). PrimeCo is a joint venture in which NYNEX and Bell Atlantic participate.
Global Presence
- In Europe, NYNEX operates the second largest cable-telephony network in
the United Kingdom, a telephone network in Gibraltar, and a cellular partnership
in Greece. NYNEX also publishes directories in Poland, Slovakia and the Czech
Republic.
- In Asia, NYNEX has focused on high-growth markets in developing nations and
is building and operating wireline and wireless networks through partnerships and
joint ventures.
- In Thailand, TelecomAsia has built more than 1.5 million lines of
a 2.6 million-line fiber optic network in Bangkok and offers both telecommunications
and cable television services. NYNEX is partners with CP Group, which has extensive
relationships in China and Southeast Asia (NYNEX has direct and indirect interests
in TelecomAsia totaling 18.7%).
- In the Philippines, BayanTel is installing 300,000 lines in metropolitan
Manila and southern Luzon (NYNEX owns a 15% interest).
- In Indonesia, NYNEX is a strategic operating partner in the joint venture
Excelcomindo, which will bring digital cellular services to 195 million potential
customers in the world's fourth most populous nation (NYNEX owns a 23% interest).
- The Bangkok office of NYNEX Science & Technology performs research and
development projects involving networks in the Asian region.
- FLAG (Fiber-optic Link Around the Globe), the world's longest undersea fiber optic cable, will link high-growth markets along a 17,000-mile (23,000 kilometer) route through the China seas, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. FLAG will have 12 landing points in Egypt, China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Spain, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom (NYNEX is managing sponsor and owns a 39% interest).
Long Distance
NYNEX has filed with the FCC to offer international long distance service. NYNEX expects to offer long distance service outside its region by mid-summer and expects to receive approval for in-region service in New York by the end of the year.
Entertainment
- TELE-TV acquires and develops content and the necessary technological
systems to support its owners' video services organizations (NYNEX owns a 33%
interest). TELE-TV is a joint venture in which NYNEX and Bell Atlantic participate.
- Bell Atlantic and NYNEX have made a joint investment in CAI Wireless
(a wireless cable company) to speed delivery of video entertainment and information
services in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. Under the terms of the
transaction, NYNEX has the right to use the distribution systems of CAI to begin
offering digital video programming to customers.
- NYNEX CableComms, one of the world's first companies to provide cable television and telecommunications services over the same network, has 2.7 million franchise homes and more than 200,000 subscribers to both cable TV and telecommunications services in the United Kingdom.

NYNEX ASIA COMMUNICATIONS

NYNEX Asia Communications concentrates NYNEX business units, partnerships and alliances in Asia. NYNEX is a major communications provider in Asia with joint ventures in Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as under Asian seas.

NYNEX CableComms, the second largest cable TV and telecommunications operator in the United Kingdom, now passes 1.2 million of 2.7 million homes in 16 franchise areas. In June 1995, NYNEX completed an initial public offering of CableComms stock.
