Joe Timpanaro to Lead FLAG

Joe Timpanaro, who began his career with New York Telephone in 1971, has been elected chairman and CEO of Fiber-optic Link Around the Globe (FLAG), a joint venture to build the world's longest undersea fiber-optic cable system.

He recently retired from NYNEX Network Systems as senior vice president of Finance and Strategic Planning. Prior to that position, Timpanaro served as president and managing director of NYNEX CableComms in the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1992.

"We are proud to say that FLAG will be the most advanced in technology and structure -- it will serve as a role model for future cables," Mr. Timpanaro said.
